Smart CV Search uses AI to help you quickly find suitable candidates by automatically matching related job titles, skills, and qualifications.

This feature saves time and provides more relevant results.

In Bullhorn, navigate to Vacancies and select any job.

Go to CV Search on the top navigation menu.

The Smart Search panel is on the left-hand side under Filters.

Make sure the toggle is set to On.

Step 1 – Turn on Smart options

Select the filters you want to use:
  • Related Job Titles – includes similar or alternative titles

  • Skills – matches relevant skills for the role

  • Degrees – includes related qualifications

  • Related Software – finds candidates with relevant tools or systems experience

Turning on more options gives wider results. Turning off options gives more precise results.

Step 2 – Enter a job title

Type the role into the Job Title box at the top
Examples: Lead Developer, Project Manager, Nurse

Choose one of the following options:

  • Job Title – searches for the exact title only

  • Everywhere (CV + Job Title) – searches the whole CV and job title for broader results (recommended)

As you start typing, you will see a list of suggested job titles that already exist in the system.
You can add multiple titles to expand your search.

When you hover over the title you want to add to the search, a popup will appear on the right showing the keywords the search will use. These are grouped into job title, skills, or software, and each group has a different colour that will highlight those keywords in the CV preview.

A Boolean box will automatically show the keywords being used for the search.

Edit your search terms

Click the edit icon next to the search title to view more details about the keywords used for:

  • Job titles

  • Skills

  • Degree

  • Related software

You can modify the search by adding or removing specific terms.

You can also exclude specific keywords from the search in the 'Excluded terms (NOT)' section.

When you finish updating the searched terms for your job title, click 'Use Boolean'. At this stage, your changes are only temporary and are not saved.

If you want to keep them for future use, click 'Search' and then 'Save Search'.

Step 3 - Click Search

Press the green Search button to run your search.

You will see a list of matching candidates, with matching keywords highlighted in the results.

If you have a contract for credit-based CV Search, remember that each CV preview will use your CV Search credits.

You can also hide candidates you have already viewed, or use the Sort by filter to sort candidates by relevance to your search, distance or by candidates' activity.

CV Preview

To view candidates details, click on the box with candidate results or the 'eye' icon.
It will open the CV Preview. Remember that every CV Preview uses a credit from your CV Search contract (except Candidate Search database, Bullhorn database or CV Search contracts with unlimited access).

At the top of the CV Preview, you have the following options:
  • Send this CV to your email address

  • Shortlist the candidate to your existing jobs

The CV preview will highlight keywords in different colours for job titles, skills, and degrees or software, making it easier to review and find relevant information.

In the CV-Library database, some information in the CV preview may appear as hidden or ‘Redacted’. This means the CV matches your search, but the candidate’s details are locked. Clicking the ‘Unlock CV’ button will use one CV-Library search credit and show all the candidate’s details.

Saving your searches

You can also save your searches to reuse them later.

This helps you quickly repeat common searches without setting the filters again.

Useful tips:

  • Make sure you select all your available CV databases to get more results and avoid missing opportunities.

  • Use the left-hand side filters if you want to narrow your search by location, salary, job type, or candidate activity.

  • You can also set these filters as default with your preferred values. All new Smart Searches will then use these customised filters automatically.

FAQ:

1. What will happen if the job you are looking for is not in Smart CV Search?

In this case, the system will try to match the best Boolean keywords for your job title.
Click ‘+ Generate a Boolean Search’ and the system will add additional keywords that might match this job title. You can modify it by adding or removing related job titles, skills, degrees, or software.

However, because this is your customised job title, it will only be available to you and not to other users within your company.
